Lionsgate May Spin-Off Starz Network
Lionsgate is reportedly considering whether to split and spin-off its fast-expanding premium cable channel Starz into a separate company reports The Wall Street Journal.
The report indicates Lionsgate has been in discussions to separate the two entities “through a variety of means, including a sale, spinoff or special-purpose acquisition vehicle” but no decision has yet been taken at this point as the studio faces pressure to unlock hidden value at Starz.
Such a split would reduce the studio’s overall debt load and the channel would be a potential valuable acquisition for content. Previous reports have suggested the studio was offered $5 billion by CBS for the premium platform.
Starz got into the SVOD race early and while still relatively small fry in that arena, they have a solid library of content behind them including “Outlander,” “Black Sails,” “American Gods,” “Power,” “Spartacus,” “Ash vs Evil Dead,” “Vida,” “Counterpart,” “Survivor’s Remorse,” “The Girlfriend Experience,” “Now Apocalypse,” “Camelot,” “Magic City,” “Blunt Talk,” “Flesh and Bone” and more.
